How to measure ROI in HR training?

Topic: ROI Workers

Question

August 26, 2014

How do we measure return on Investment as HR training and Development Department on our Key Function Ares.

Mooiman - South Africa

25322

Answer

The costs for training workers includes wages paid the workers during the training, wages or costs of the trainers, and other miscellaneous items. This is the investment made by the company.

The company management wants to see increased productivity and perhaps new skills that will increase profits.

Measurement of existing productivity could include determining how much money it costs for the workers to perform their tasks. Work from an untrained worker would cost more than from a skilled worker.

The money saved by improved performance over a set period of time divided minus the cost of training, divided by the cost of training would be the ROI for that period of time. For example, if it cost $2000 to train the workers, and the company saved $3000 in two months, the ROI would be (3000 - 2000)/2000 = 50% for that period of time. Often the ROI is much less.

Training and corporate expectations

Topic: General

Question

November 10, 2011

How Training could affect the application of business planning and corporate expectations

luckshan - UK

22160

Answer

It is difficult to find highly skilled workers. It is often less expensive to train existing works. Likewise, managers need to be trained in the latest technologies and management methods.

Training costs money, so the return-on-investment must be measured to verify it is worthwhile. See: Determining Training Return-on-Investment (ROI).

Please assist me ROI calculation process

Topic: Determine ROI

Question

March 24, 2011

I'm working for am Automobile Industry which sells luxury vehicles & vehicle parts to the customers. We are planning to do a training programme on for the Sales & support staff.

Please assist me ROI calculation process.

Ruvini - Sri Lanka

21379

Answer

Your "investment" in training your staff is the cost to the company to do that training. This includes the cost of paying the trainer, using a room and equipment for the training, and the cost of having the staff in the training.

If they are taking the training during working hours, you need to consider the hourly wages of the people, as well as an estimated loss in sales during that time.

The determine the return on this investment, you must first look at sales, profits and customer satisfaction over a period of time. Then after the training, you measure the same metrics over a similar period. The increase in profits to the company is the return on the training investment.

Writing dissertation on ROI

Topic: ROI Workers

Question

April 8, 2010

Hi,

My name is Ben Reeves. I am a student at Southampton University. For my
final year dissertation I am investigating ROTI analyses. I was wondering if anybody in your organisation would be kind enough to answer a few questions for me.

I am seeking the opinions of individuals who use or devise ROTI analyses.

The questions are as follows:
Feel free to expand on them as much as possible I am really interested in what you think and feel, the more opinions the better!

What are ROTI (return on training investment) analyses used for within
organisations?

Who uses the ROTI analyses?

Are the analyses accurate?

Is there a difficulty in attributing performance benefits of the
organisation to training programmes despite these analyses?

Are there alternative methods that yield similar information?

How does ROI importance differ at different levels of the organisation?

What i am trying to get to really is how the analyses are used and what practical obstacles there are if any? I am looking for your experience and opinion on the utility and validity of the ROTI analyses.

These questions will hopefully help by giving a framework from which you can give your views. What does ROI mean to you?

I hope you can help.

Many Thanks,

Ben - UK

Answer

The problem in analyzing the return-on-investment from training is setting metrics. Often there are no solid ways to measure the results of training in soft skills, such as communication or dealing with others. Also, the investment is money up front, but the return may be spread over many years and may even include influence on other workers.

A big problem is that many times the ROI from training is skewed for management to justify the training.

I believe education is part of training

Topic: Difference with Education

Question

March 4, 2010

the way i understand this two concepts is more less the same. because education is the key to training and development meaning education is at broader level. while training is to acquire necessary skills and knowledge to do a specific task.but both education and learning similarities is that you are getting knowledge even though education don't give straight skills

mirtha - Namibia

19328

Answer

Educators think of education as academic and theories or what is taught in school. On the other hand, trainers are more concerned with specific tasks.

However, you are correct that training is also education. It is learning. There is a big overlap between the two disciplines. There are many classes taught in schools that are skill-based training. There are some classes in training that are concerned with theory--especially what are known as soft skills or people skills.

What is the length of training classes versus education?

Topic: Difference with Education

Question

December 3, 2009

I truly accept you answers, but may you make more clarification on this; Do education and training differ in terms of periods, which means education takes long time and training take short time.

FRANK - Tanzania

18778

Answer

Typically, education concerns studying from books and from the lectures of the teacher. Students are tested on how they understand the material, as well as what they remember. Usually, educational lessons or classes are all about an hour long, although a students may spend the whole day in several different classes.

On the other hand, training involves less understanding and more of how to do things. In many cases, training in his hands-on, where the students or learners must apply their knowledge immediately. Often training classes for adults, who have finished school and are learning specific job-related skills, may last for several hours. It is not unusual for adult training to go on for a all day, with only a break for lunch.
