Mini-Quiz: Photodetectors

by Ron Kurtus (29 June 2006)

Take this Mini-Quiz to check your understanding of the lesson material.

1. Heinrich Hertz discovered the photoelectric effect, but who first explained why it worked?

His brother Rudolf Hertz, who was a biology professor

Albert Einstein in his first published paper

No one has yet be able to explain the effect

2. What is an advantage of phototransistors over photodiodes?

They are more sensitive to light

They are much smaller

They can be purchased in most stores

3. How is the change in conductivity of a material measured?

By measuring its expansion with the increase in temperature

By adding a conductivity-o-gram in the circuit

By running a small current through it and measuring the electrical resistance

If you got all three correct, you are on your way to becoming a champion in electro-optics. If you had problems, you had better look over the material again.
