Concerning "1952 Santayana good-bye":
Famed philosopher George Santayana died in 1952

This is all you said about the most pivotal part of Billy Joel's song "We Didn't Start the Fire". You did such a good job, so it must be mentioned that Santayana was a philosopher who was popularly known for aphorisms, such as "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

Glenn - USA

Thanks for the comment. I added your suggested quote to the Santayana entry and included credit from you.

Best wishes for continued historical success.

No mention of Martin Luther King

Topic: Start the Fire

May 19, 2018

Why was there no mention of Martin Luther King in the song, "We Didn't Start the Fire"?

Gary - USA

Yes, it is strange that song-writer Billy Joel did not mention anything about Martin Luther King Jr. in "We Didn't Start the Fire", since he was a major figure in the 1960's. Instead, there are a number of obscure people and events mentioned.

Perhaps he couldn't think of anything that would fit in with the rhythm of the song. But I agree that there should have been mention of MLK.

Wants us to remove information

Topic: Start the Fire Facts

September 1, 2017

I am a high school librarian. I am planning to do a We Didn't Start the Fire unit with my AP United States History students. They will each have a line of the lyrics to research. They will each create PowerPoint slides for each historical event, person, or thing named. It will all be compiled into one huge PowerPoint. Students will present their slides to the class. I am very excited about doing this with them. I would like to respectfully ask if you could possibly take this info down. I don't want my students to just copy from your site.

Michelle - USA

It is a good project for your students to study the various historical events.

However, asking us to remove information from our website is out of line. What about the many other resources on the Internet? Should they also be removed?

A better lesson is to teach the students to avoid plagiarism and to cite their resources.

Best wishes for success in your class.

May 19, 2017

yeah so I'm scrolling down the list and see that for "Laurence of Arabia" you put down the movie and not the actual person himself, "T.E. Laurence".

Ricardo - USA

Thanks for the input. I updated the part on Lawrence of Arabia to include some facts about T. E. Lawrence.

Many still refer to cops as pigs

Topic: When Cops were Pigs

May 15, 2017

just a comment: I and many people I know still refer to the police as 'pigs'....

campbell - USA

At one time "cops" was a derogatory term for police. Now, that term is accepted and I guess it has changed to "pigs".

Kennedy half dollars

Topic: Communist US Coins

May 7, 2017

Do all the Kennedy half dollar have the mark on the collar or is it a rare coin

Debra - USA

I haven't seen many Kennedy half-dollars recently, but I don't think they changed the design. It also seems that only the half-dollars and the dimes have the artist's mark on them. Some pennies have a "D" on the front, but that indicates the coin was minted in Denver.

The ideas that the Kennedy half-dollar and the Roosevelt dime have Communist insignia seems to be a silly myth.

Interested in conspiracy theories

Topic: Lincoln and Kennedy

February 7, 2017

I am very interested in conspiracy theories. I believe that there is something more to the assassinations of JFK and Lincoln. If you would like to discuss more with me I'm available and if you have any more similarity's I'd be delighted to hear them. Thanks.

Anna - USA

Conspiracy theories about both assassinations are interesting.

Apparently John Wilkes Booth recruited a gang of conspirators to kidnap Lincoln. He had recruited Michael O'Laughlen, Samuel Arnold, Lewis Powell (alias Paine or Payne), John Surratt, David Herold, and George Atzerodt. On March 15th Booth met with the entire group at Gautier's Restaurant on Pennsylvania Avenue about three blocks from Ford's Theatre to discuss Lincoln's abduction. Apparently, things didn't work out, so he assassinated Lincoln instead. See John Wilkes Booth Biography.

The life of Lee Harvey Oswald was very strange and included such events as joining the Marines, moving to Russia, then coming back to the U.S., promoting Castro, and then killing Kennedy. Some conspiracy theories say that he couldn't done all this without help--perhaps from the CIA.

Best wishes for success in your studies.

Wore a PIG pin

Topic: When Cops were Pigs

January 17, 2017

i was a police officer during this time for the city of Kankakee which was a racist dept and we were issued a tie pin with a pig in the middle and words around it said "Pride Integrity Guts. I still have that pin.what happened during my time there you would not believe.

dennis - USA

Thanks for sharing your experience. It was good that the police forces turned what was supposed to be an insult into a positive statement.

I see that some of the recent demonstrators have been calling the police "pigs" again. They could stifle that by wearing pins like you had back then.
