Mini-Quiz: Uses of Friction

by Ron Kurtus

Take this Mini-Quiz to check your understanding of the lesson material.

1. Is friction required when you are sleeping?

No, because you are not awake or doing anything

Scientists are not certain since the person is not awake

Yes, because without friction you could not roll over

2. How is friction used when walking?

Friction does not apply to walking

Friction between your shoes and the floor allows you to move forward

Friction makes your legs move back and forth

3. What friction compromise is there for effectively riding a bicycle?

You want to eliminate all friction, so that you can go real fast

You want to roll with a minimum of resistance but yet be able to stop

Reducing the lubrication on the tires is a good compromise

If you got all three correct, you are on your way to becoming a Champion in Physics. If you had problems, you had better look over the material again.
