Mini-Quiz: Gravitational Escape Velocity with Saturn V Rocket

by Ron Kurtus (revised 7 March 2011)

Take this Mini-Quiz to check your understanding of the lesson material.

1. What would happen to a rocket that attained the escape velocity at a very low altitude?

It would escape from Earth earlier than expected

There would be the danger to people below

The air resistance would overheat the outer shell of the rocket

2. Why were three stages used in Saturn V?

The method effectively reduced its weight as fuel was expended

Three different companies made the stages

No one really knows for sure why they did that

3. Why didn't Apollo 11 reach the gravitational escape velocity?

Apollo 11 would burn up if it ever reached the escape velocity

It wasn't necessary, since Apollo 11 was only going to the Moon

Apollo 11 exceeded the escape velocity, but the fact was never disclosed

If you got all three correct, you are on your way to becoming a Champion in Physics. If you had problems, you had better look over the material again.
