by Ron Kurtus (revised 29 November 2017)
You need to make some preparations before writing a speech. This will assure you write an effective speech.
First of all, consider the occasion for this speech and then analyze the expected audience. Next, select a subject of interest to both you and the audience. Finally, determine the end purpose of the speech and what you hope to achieve.
Questions you may have include:
- Why do you consider the occasion?
- How do you analyze the audience?
- How do you select and narrow the subject?
- How do you determine the purpose of the speech?
This lesson will answer those questions.
Consider occasion
The occasion at which your speech will be given is important in establishing the tone and purpose of the material. It also establishes the type of people in attendance and helps to determine a good topic to present.
Analyze audience
When called upon to write a speech to be given to a group, you need to determine a cross section of who is in the audience, as well as to know their interests. Then you can select a subject and purpose that would fit.
Select and narrow the topic
Sometimes a subject or topic can fit the audience and the occasion but is too wide-ranging to fit within your time limit. You need to narrow down the subject into a specific area. A short speech is much better than one that is too long.
Determine the purpose of the speech
Once you know the occasion and audience and have selected a good topic, you can to think of what your end purpose is and what reaction you want from your audience. Do you want the audience to be persuaded about some issue, to be informed, or to be entertained?
Summary
Before you write a speech, you need to take some preparation steps. First of all, consider the occasion for this speech and then analyze the expected audience. Next, select a subject of interest to both you and the audience. Finally, determine the end purpose of the speech and what you hope to achieve.
